Course Overview

Drinking water management in First Nations communities is a shared responsibility.  This course will introduce participants to the roles and responsibilities of operators, First Nations leadership and government in providing safe drinking water in these communities.

This online course will review Indigenous Services Canada Protocols and guidance documents that outline procedures, processes and best practices for providing safe drinking water in First Nations communities.

In this material, participants will have access to suggested step-by-step instructions and templates for developing source water protection plans, emergency response plans, maintenance management plans and addressing drinking water advisories.

Primary focus will be on the following documents:

  • Guidance on Addressing Drinking Water Advisories
  • Protocol for Centralized Drinking Water Systems in First Nations Communities
  • Protocol for Decentralised Water and Wastewater Systems in First Nations Communities
  • First Nations On-Reserve Source Water Protection Plan
  • Maintenance Management for Drinking Water and Wastewater Systems in First Nations
  • Emergency Response Plan for Drinking Water Systems in First Nations Communities

Target Audience

This course is designed for all partners responsible for providing drinking water in First Nations communities.

The materials will be of particular interest to drinking water operators working in First Nations communities, drinking water system managers and supervisors, Chiefs and members of council, and federal and provincial government staff responsible for First Nations drinking water systems.
